MAT 004: How Kenny McPeek Lost Over $250,000 from His App And Why I Still Think It Will Be a Success!

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In this session of the Mobile App Tycoon Podcast I talk to Kenny McPeek, a professional horse trainer and developer of the app Horse Races Now.

Kenny’s passion for horse racing led him to create this app for horse racing enthusiasts as well as to get the younger generation interested and involved in the sport!

Unfortunately, Kenny’s journey from idea to final product has been a majorly bumpy one.  His first experience hiring a developer resulted in him being ripped off and given nothing in return.  Lately, he’s been struggling to get approval from top racing tracks to use their video content in his app.

However, through all this Kenny continues to believe in his app…and apparently he’s not the only one!  Horse Races Now has over 20,000 users with 100 more downloading it every day!

In this interview, Kenny will share both his successes and his failures with this app, and how he’s going to turn this app from a financial failure to a success!

In this session you’ll learn:

  • Why Kenny decided to get into app development when he was already a successful horse trainer.
  • How Kenny got ripped off for $45,000 from an app developer that produced NOTHING.
  • How much it cost Kenny to develop his app once he found legitimate developers.
  • Why Kenny compares his development experiences to the explorers, Lewis & Clark
  • What app Kenny would eventually like to model his monetization methods after.
  • How Kenny is going about getting approval from race tracks to use their video content in his app.
  • How Kenny gets 100+ new users every day WITHOUT marketing!
  • Kenny’s advice for choosing app developers.

Case Study – Providing App Development Solutions to Small Businesses: Part 3

It’s been awhile since I posted an update regarding this case study due to the holidays and many other projects I have going on.  If you need a refresher as to what I’ve done so far check out Part 1 to learn about what my goals are for this case study and check out Part 2 to read about what I’ve done to prepare to sell my app to independent pizzeria owners.

To review, this case study has four “phases”:

1) Planning (DONE!)

2) Preparing (DONE!)

3) Selling

4) Developing

As you can probably tell, in this 3rd part of the case study I’m going to be focusing on how my attempts at selling this idea to pizzeria owners has been going.

MAT 003: How an 18 Year Old is Making 6 Figures from Reference Apps – An Interview With Spencer Costanzo, President of Malibu Apps

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In this session of the Mobile App Tycoon Podcast I have the privilege of interviewing Spencer Costanzo, the Founder and President of Malibu Apps.

In around a year and a half after starting his app development company, Spencer has managed to publish nearly 40 apps and over 30 Kindle eBooks!  To make that even more impressive, he is making 6 figures each from mobile apps and Kindle eBooks!  And if that wasn’t enough…he’s only 18.

This was a really fun interview for me because Spencer started at my age, we’re both in the same businesses (developing apps and publishing Kindle eBooks), and look where he’s at now!  I’d like to think I’m just a few steps behind him and I’ll be reaching his level of success in the near future! :)

Finally, Spencer released an app development course which reveals all of his strategies behind his 6 figure app business.  I was lucky enough to get access to it, and I highly recommend it if you’re interested in getting into developing reference apps like Spencer!  If you’d like to check it out, I’d really appreciate it if you could use my affiliate link by clicking hereAnd don’t forget to use the promo code “fiftyoff” to get 50% off!

In this session you’ll learn:

  • How Spencer’s first app made him $30/day and then FAILED.
  • How Spencer finds freelance writers all around the world to get content written for his apps.
  • How Spencer emulates other successful apps to make sure his apps are profitable.
  • Why the number of reviews means NOTHING when guessing how well an app has been selling!
  • Spencer’s strategy for finding profitable app topics!
  • The pricing tactic Spencer uses to boost his app to the top of the charts!
  • Spencer’s KILLER strategy of validating app ideas by publishing Kindle eBooks and how that has “accidentally” turned into ANOTHER 6 figure business for him!
  • Spencer’s best tip for people getting started in app development.

How to Protect Your App Ideas from Being Stolen When Outsourcing

If there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s that entrepreneurs LOVE ideas – especially Appreneurs!  I know I constantly think of ideas for new apps all the time and if you’re looking to get into app development (or you already are), chances are you’re in the same boat as me!

However, another thing that most entrepreneurs have in common is that they’re afraid of people STEALING their ideas.  What could be worse than coming up with a genius app idea, only to have someone you hired to develop the app for you steal it for themself?!

So naturally, because of this fear, many prospective and beginning app developers are wondering what they should do to protect their app ideas!

So today I decided to answer this question once and for all.  I am about to share with you exactly what you should do to protect your app ideas from being stolen when outsourcing…

MAT 002: Building a Business Around an App with Jason Seligman

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

In this session of the Mobile App Tycoon Podcast I chat with Jason Seligman, the developer of the highly successful app VIN Viper.  While many people focus on the quantity of apps they developer, Jason really focuses on the quality of his app and built it into it’s own business.  That business is now made up of 12 people and Jason is the first to give credit to the VIN Viper team that has worked so hard to make VIN Viper the success it is today.

VIN Viper is a free car appraisal tool that shows you exactly what your car is worth and is being used by both individual car buyers and sellers as well as car dealerships who buy cars from auctions.

What I like the about Jason’s story is how he treated his app as a legitimate business from Day 1.  He thought about marketing during the idea and development phases, thinks about long term profitability rather than making a few extra bucks in the short-term, and treats his users as valued customers.

In this session you’ll learn:

  • How Jason came up with the idea for VIN Viper.
  • What competitors were present and what Jason did to set his app apart.
  • Jason’s philosophy about giving the customer a great experience.
  • Why he gives such a valuable app for FREE and how he makes money from it selling reports and other products.
  • How Jason is marketing VIN Viper both online AND offline.
  • How Jason creates mutually beneficial partnerships with other companies to help promote his app.
  • Jason’s biggest challenge as a business owner and app developer.
